In order to raise awareness about sexual violence and exploitation, we as a charity have to communicate this through technology and social media.  We are looking for innovative students who want to make a positive societal impact through communications and media, enabling us to partner with other organisations, engage with the general public and reach women.

As a Communications and Social Media Intern at Streetlight UK, you will be heavily involved in managing our social media platforms, having the opportunity to expand and solidify our online presence, our website and monthly newsletters, In addition, you will have the opportunity to become well informed about awareness days, news updates and legislation changes surrounding sexual exploitation, trafficking and grooming.

Your responsibilities as a Communication and Social Media Intern will involve you updating, redesigning elements and creating new pages across our platforms, utilising your creativity and innovation, whilst making it fit with the charity’s branding. As our intern, you will work for 4 days a week and will report to the Executive Assistant and Director. Full training will be provided so that you are familiar with the nature of what is involved in working alongside women involved in prostitution. We are often involved in fundraising/awareness events, which you will take part in as well as team meetings. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to utilise the skills you have been developing at degree level, and assist us as a charity to improve our online presence. Please note that this internship/placement is an unpaid role.

Experience

Experience

  • Experience of communicating and organising with a variety of staff.
  • Experience of working in the UK charity sector (Desirable).
  • Experience in creating social media content or controlling a social media account.
  • Knowledge of key issues for those involved in prostitution and the sex trade. (Desirable).

Qualifications

  • Graduate or in the process of being educated to degree level or equivalent (Essential).
  • Industry specific training (Desirable).

We understand that working within the charity sector can be a challenge and things change all the time. We are looking for flexible, adaptable and passionate interns who share the same enthusiasm to see sexual violence and exploitation end and want to use their communication and social media skills to achieve this through our online presence.

We are particularly looking for those who show:

  • Good administrative and IT skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office packages: Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook, as well as MailChimp and WordPress.
  • Knowledge of how to use sites such as Canva for creating social media.
  • Excellent creativity and innovative skills for designing social media and other ideas to raise awareness across our platform.
  • Knowledge of how to use social media platforms to receive the best outcomes of interaction and engagement from our followers.
  • Good personal organisational skills with the ability to prioritise and to work to and meet daily priorities and deadlines. Also, to ensure social media posts and newsletters are scheduled and posted at the correct time.
  • A passion for working alongside charities, whose purpose is to create societal change.
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate and work effectively across teams and with a variety of people both inside and outside the organisation.
  • Good oral and written communication skills, especially when discussing such sensitive issues, where language and wording is important.
  • Demonstrable ability to work independently.
